"I just completed a private intro lesson last night with Seattle Shibari and it was absolutely fantastic! He was really great about showing how to complete ties and then guiding me through them. My husband was very comfortable working with him as well. We are both looking forward to future opportunities to learn from Seattle Shibari and highly, highly recommend him for anyone looking to learn rope work and for anyone wanting to have some customization in the lesson, a private lesson is well worth it.--"
"The best in the biz! Jonathan has traveled the world learning his skills and is a true artist and master when it comes to shibari. As a student rope bottom, I felt safe in his workshop and learned quite a few new skills with my partner. We really appreciate how clear, focused and professional the space and sequence of events was. Highly recommend."
"My partner and I both have high expectations and strong opinions about instructors, and we have always walked away from Seattle Shibari's classes with nothing but good things to say... I'm particularly appreciative of Seattle Shibari's attention to consent and respect of bottoms (especially asking the bottom before touching them or the ties on them) and his general demeanor that doesn't demand respect, but rather earns it through his actions. I'd recommend that anyone take his classes if you have the opportunity."
"I love your pedagogical approach that seamlessly blends humor, aesthetic, and hard skills."
"My Partner and I had such a great experience with Jonathan. We booked a 3-hour private lesson and learned so much. He was incredibly professional and made us feel very comfortable from the get go. Both my Partner and I are incredibly new to rope, and Jonathan took time to go over the basics, not only of the actual tying, but about physical safety and consent as well, which is so important. He allowed my Partner to take videos and pictures of the ties as he demonstrated them so we'd have them for future reference; and they've been a really valuable resource to refresh our memory when practicing. I'd recommend anyone interested in Shibari to take a class or book a lesson with Jonathan. We'll certainly be back."
"I have taken both private and public classes from Seattle Shibari as well as from other instructors, and I can unequivocally say that Jonathan is by far the best rope instructor I have ever seen. It is not just the fact that he is good with rope. Or that he understands the meaning and function behind each knot. His true value as a teacher comes from his ability to explain something complex and potentially very dangerous in the most actionable and fun way possible. If you're interested in the art of rope, attend one of his workshops. I know I will continue to do so for years to come. Thank you!"
He is known for a distinctive and constantly evolving blend of Western & Eastern aesthetics & perspectives in his interpretation of the art, and has performed and taught for sold-out audiences across the world, including Paris, Rome, London, Shanghai, Los Angeles, Athens, Tokyo, Barcelona, and Bangkok.
With an academic & personal background in Japanese history, culture, and language. Jonathan has made numerous extended pilgrimages to Japan over the last 30 years, immersing himself in both classical martial arts and the art of kinbaku. This sensibility continues to inform his approach to tying.
A 13-year practitioner of the art, Jonathan began studying & practicing Shibari in 2011; since 2015 he has focused his rope studies in the Tokyo area, where he travels annually for study. Jonathan holds a high-level teaching license from renowned rope artist Hajime Kinoko of Tokyo, Japan, in his style of Kinbaku. He feels a deep sense of gratitude to the teachers and rope partners who have helped him on his path.
